SUPPLEMENTS

Most complete feeds contain all the nutrients your horse needs to stay healthy. If your horse eats only hay cubes, he may need a daily multivitamin, which can be found at the feed store. Some owners feed their horses supplements to help specific body parts. For example, if your horse’s hooves are crumbly, you could add to his diet biotin, a vitamin that strengthens hooves. If his coat is dull, supplements are available to make it shine.

Many owners feed their older arthritic horses supplements that include joint lubricants such glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, or hyaluronic acid. Ask your veterinarian if she thinks a joint supplement would benefit your horse. When a supplement is required, simply mix it into your horse’s meal. If your horse is fussy about what he eats, stir in some applesauce to hide the taste of the supplement.
